Microdermabrasion(Skin polishing) FAQs

What is microdermabrasion?

Microdermabrasion is a powerful mechanical exfoliation with an expensive machine, generally either the original crystal microdermabrasion technology or the newer diamond-tip microdermabrasion.

How does it work?

It works by removing the uppermost layer of dead skin cells from the face.

Who should consider microdermabrasion?

Microdermabrasion is right for all kin types and for anyone interested in improving the appearance of scarring, fine lines, wrinkles, pigmentation problems, uneven skin tone, dull, lifeless and sundamaged skin.

Will I experience any discomfort?

Initially you may feel a mild scratching sensation as the crystals make contact with the skin. As the treatments continue, the experience is comparable to a deep massage. Mild redness may occur ½ hour to 1day, depending on the aggressiveness of the program.

What results can I expect?

Depending on the area treated, you will notice an improvement in your skins appearance; acre scars will become less obvious. Age spots and fine lines are erased and may patients report that their skin seems to be softer, smoother and younger looking.

How soon will I see results?

After your first treatment, your skin will have a fresh pink glow. Improvement continues to route your treatment program. The number of treatments recommended for maximum results ranges from 2 to 12.

Who are the best candidates for microdermabrasion?

Men and women who are in good health, have good skin tones and have realistic expectations.

How long do the treatment sessions take?

Each session lasts about 10 to 30minutes.

What are the benefits of microdermabrasion over other procedures?

  1. Takes less time.
  2. Less discomfort.
  3. Recovery is quick.
  4. No disruptions to normal activities.

How often can I take the treatment?

It depends on the area and type of skin. However for most people 6 sessions, 2-3weeks apart give good results.

What are the crystals made of?

Aluminium oxide also known as corundum, the second hardest mineral after diamond – it is non-allerginic and very safe.

What is diamond tip microdermabrasion?

Instead of using crystals a diamond tipped probe is applied with vaccum for exfoliation.

What areas are mostly treated?

Face and neck, elbows and knees, shoulders, hands and feet, scratch marks on the abdomen.

How will I look after the treatment?

Skin will look slightly flushed immediately after the treatment, but returns to normal in about 30minutes. Even after 1 sitting the skin appears smoother and will continue to improve with further sittings.

Any patients who should not undergo the treatment?

Do not get microdermabrasion if you have extremely sensitive skin, vascular conditions like rosacea, skin inflammation, bacterial infections, lack of touch sensation, tendency to keloid scarring, or have gotten Botox within 72 hours. Other contraindications to microdermabrasion include sunburn, viral infections like herpes simplex, and acne. If you are taking anti-coagulant drugs please inform the doctor.

What to do before the sittings?

Stop all skin care products, retinoids for 1week before microdermabrasion. Continue using good quality moisturizers.

What to do after the treatment session?

Use sunscreen, avoid direct sunlight, retinoid creams for 3-4days.
