Varicose veins are a chronic medical condition where the veins are enlarged and appear in blue or dark purple. They are caused due to faulty valves in veins causing blood to flow in the reverse direction resulting in the veins being swollen and they are mostly seen in legs and feet.

Varicose veins are usually caused due to obesity, genetics, certain medication, prolonged standing, etc. It is the most common problem in adults. Treatment is rarely required for this problem, but if there is discomfort due to severe swelling, itching, or pain then one has to go for the treatment.

Varicose veins are sometimes a cosmetic problem too.

Endovenous laser ablation is the most effective treatment for varicose veins, during this treatment, a catheter is inserted in the vein and laser light is sent through it. It causes the vein to heat up and close. Gradually all of the veins are sealed off.
